What to expect... Online counseling offers the same kind of compassion and empathy provided to in-person, face-to-face clients. A basic tenet of counseling is unconditional positive regard towards clients and all the information you present is viewed with a non-judgmental, open mind. You can also expect honesty, straight forward communication and, in some cases, statements which may challenge your current thinking or beliefs. You may at times be recommended some reading, suggested a course of action or assigned some homework exercises. You may be asked questions to which the answer is not simple nor readily available. You may be required to do some self inquiry. You can expect your rights as a client to be honored at all times and in no way is your privacy or confidentiality violated - except under very rare circumstances in which legality requires a breach. To learn more about privacy and confidentiality, click the Code of Ethics link at the left. Regarding turn around time, you can expect a response to your email within 24-72 hours. It is possible to arrange a predetermined date and time when client and counselor can engage in live chat or telecounseling, or even webcam videocounseling. However, one of the benefits of online counseling through email is the time required to think out and prepare what is going to be stated in the email and the time required to reflect on what was said in the counselor's reply email. You can also expect some humor, insight, support, caring and practical, positive results. |
