How does it work?

Basically, online email counseling at Open Mind Counseling works like this:

1) You make a payment for the initial email session at the payment page. As explained below, the initial email session is actually two email exchanges.

2) After making the payment for the initial email session, you are taken to the Intake Form, which you fill out and submit. The Intake Form asks for contact information, general background information, current situation information and information on the issue you would like to discuss.

3) The counselor replies to this initial submission providing therapeutic advice, feedback, insights, techniques, suggestions for readings and resources, and may pose some questions.

4) You respond to this reply, to which the counselor will then respond. This then completes the initial two email sessions. You are then welcome to purchase additional emails from the payment page.

Subsequent sessions may be via email, or other means....

There is also live chat sessions which allows for real time written communication between parties, and telecounseling, which is counseling over the telephone either via computer based technology or a toll free number. Webcam videocounseling is also available. Any of these options are available and can be purchased at the payment page.

The only real difference between online counseling and face to face counseling, is the medium - the platform used to engage in therapeutic dialogue. Email is a more time consuming, thoughtful medium. There are advantages to taking the time to write out thoughts and feelings, situations and circumstances. And, there are advantages in having the counselors reply in email to read, re-read and ponder.

Livechat/instant messaging is more immediate. Like email, it leaves out the vocal dimension of a therapeutic dialogue. Telecounseling adds that missing piece. Webcam videocounseling  adds yet another dimension of visual communication. Now, both parties can not only hear each other, but see each other as well.

You are not required to begin online counseling via email, although it is highly recommended if this is your first experience with online counseling. You can go directly to live chat or telecounseling if you prefer.
