Chandala (noun): a made up composite word derived from “chakra” and “mandala
The word “chakra” is from the classical Indian language of Sanskrit. It translates as “wheel” or “disk” and signifies one of seven basic energy centers in the body. Each of these centers correlates to major nerve ganglia branching forth from the spinal column. In addition, the chakras also correlate to levels of consciousness, archetypal elements, developmental stages of life, colors, sounds, body functions, and much, much more.
The word "mandala" is also a Sanskrit word loosely translated to mean "circle." A mandala is far more than a simple shape. It represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the complex organizational structure of life itself--a cosmic diagram that reminds us of our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds
The word “kaleidoscope” originates from the Greek “kalos” which means “beautiful,” “eidos” which means “form” and “skopein” which means “view.” Thus, kaleidoscope is viewing a beautiful form which certainly applies to a Chandala. Thus the name, Chandala Kalos.
Although some Chandala images are wheel or circle shaped, some are also egg shaped, suggestive of the human aura. Also, the orbit of our planet around our sun, and the shape of our galaxy, is more oval and egg shaped than it is a perfect circle. Some myths suggest that the human world was hatched from a cosmic egg. Whether wheel or egg shaped, and regardless of various myths and beliefs, these kaleidoscopic Chandalas often evoke a sense of the mystical, the spiritual and the sublime. The Chandalas in this gallery are all egg shaped as they more easily fit into standard sized mats and frames. Wheel shaped Chandalas are available upon request; however, they require customized mats and frames and cost more. To view samples of matted egg shaped Chandalas, click here.
